The Vibrators
'Pure Mania' and 'V2' (2 seperate discs)
Captain Oi!
It can be a very good thing when old
albums get re-released, this time on cd, because it gives those of who
missed it the first time around a chance to discover some good music.
To an extent, such is the case with
The Vibrators. Captain Oi! have released Pure Mania and V2 and
there is no mistaking the era these albums originated from. They
are pure mid ‘70's British punk - and like so many punk bands from that
time, their music has managed to escape the clutches of time and still
sounds great today.
Pure Mania starts off strongly with
Into The Future and Yeah Yeah Yeah with both tracks being accurate
representations of The Vibrators's overall sound. The album falls
down slightly early on in the piece with Keep It Clean and Sweet Sweet
Heart - there's nothing wrong with those songs per se, but they just
seem a little out of place with the rest of the record and I just don't
like them. Stiff Little Fingers is slightly reminiscent in its
verses of The Beatles's Polythene Pam, which ain't a bad thing at all.
V2 picks up where Pure Mania left
off but this time ‘round the songs have a slightly harder, faster edge
to them than their predecessors. Unlike Pure Mania, though, there
aren't any songs on this album that seem out of place. The
overall pace of the record is consistent from start to finish.
The only criticism is of the seemingly inappropriate/unnecessary use of
orchestral backing at the end of Nazi Baby.
If, like me, you've never previously
discovered The Vibrators, Captain Oi! have given you the perfect
opportunity to do so and you will thank them for it.
