'We Will Bury You'
TKO Records
Electric
Frankenstein have always been one of those bands that I've been interested to
find out what their music is like, but not interested enough to buy one of
their records out of curiosity. Needless
to say, I was pleased when this double cd fell into my hands and I must now
confess, lovers of fine rockity-roll, that I have seen the error of my ways.
A compilation of
all the covers they've done over the past 12 years, We Will Bury You is
a blast right from the bowels of dirty, low-down rock ‘n' roll. There's quite a variety of bands whose work
EF have covered over the years and this rolls them into one neat little
package. Songs such as AC/DC's High
Voltage, X's Sex And Dying In High Society (which also features
Synthia of the High School Sweethearts helping out on vocals, making this a
fine tribute to the wonderful combination of Exene Cervenka & John Doe's
vocal work - which I mean in all sincerity since I am very much an X fan),
Supersuckers's She's My Bitch, The Clash's 1977 and the Misfits's
Queen Wasp are all given a good going over and can be appreciated
regardless of how familiar, or not, you are with the original.
What makes the
album even more interesting is the liner notes.
Each song is accompanied by Sal Canzonieri's explanation of why and how
the cover came to be. These anecdotes
also give a good insight into the influences behind Electric Frankenstein's own
music. Also, I'm a sucker for great
fonts (yes, I'm a font nerd) and they've used some beauties.
Basically put, it
doesn't matter if you know the original versions of these songs or not - if you
love your rock ‘n' roll straight up and no-frills, you will enjoy this
album. I know I did.
