BackySkank (NSW) Introducing Backy Skank

From
the outset I was sceptical. A band who begins and ends their debut EP
with covers does not seem to have much to offer, right? Wrong. After
hearing the Petula Clark version of "Don't sleep in the subway", and
having a good laugh, Backy Skank's decision began to make sense. With
a quiet, almost subliminal offbeat in the background, this song should
keep any ska fan happy - or if not, then those of us who tend to fight
with our "significant other" will be nodding along to the lyrics.
Track 2, 'Fashion Victims', sounds as though it might be about
teenyboppers - be they boy or girl - however its message is for the
"rudeboys". This is another song with a faster paced, catchy tune
that, astoundingly, manages to retain an offbeat. The tempo slows
down with 'Stanley Kubrick', but this, by no means, takes anything away
from this recording. This song demonstrates their variety in style,
with the organ quite prominent. The EP speeds up again with track 4,
'Alone', another great original, and finishes with a live secret track
'These Boots' a la Nancy Sinatra (or Symaryp later on). This EP has so
much potential - but it is an EP, so it's too short. This is an EP
that should appeal to a wider audience, its style is, for lack of a
better phrase - "boppy 2-tone". Backy Skank's full-length album (which
is currently in production) is being waited for with baited breath.
