The Corps
'Nail it Shut'
Rebellion Records 2007
Look it’s only fair to preface this by saying I think the Corps are the
best thing to happen to Sydney music in recent history. They fucking
rock. We have good OI bands, great hardcore, decent punk, and a healthy
neo-crust/thrashcore thing going on if that floats your boat, but the
Corps have carved themselves a unique niche. There is an epic quality
to their brand of street-rock that is pretty much one of a kind.
That
said, in my opinion this isn’t the necessarily best showcase of what
the Corps have to offer. Maybe it’s the foreign label sticking with
shit that has a more universal appeal, but “Nail It Shut” doesn’t fully
display the Corps’ versatility. It’s solid and straight-up, and I would
be fucking impressed if I hadn’t heard more of these guys. But I have,
and I know what they can do. Truth is, I’m probably just being a
pedantic prick here. So anyway…
This is still an excellent
album. The bastard child of Rose Tattoo, Motorhead, Iron Maiden and
classic Oi!, this is driving and driven rock to pump iron to. It’s a
staunch debut lp from a band who will no doubt have an international
influence. It’s also all original. I’m a fan of their covers, but all
original material is just more impressive on an album. All said and
done, buy this. Or better yet, see ‘em live. I would simply urge anyone
who does get this and gets into it, to look out for the “Itchin For
Evil” ep for a broader view of the Corps’ capabilities.
And for the record, no I’m not selling this album. Or “Itching for Evil”. But you should own them both. Just sayin’.
