Moving Targets
Captain Oi!
Another Captain Oi! re-release. It’s amazing the amount of shit that got lumped into the “punk explosion”. This is a 1978 release, and the singer once caught a train with Johnny Rotten, so apparently it’s quintessentially punk. Got vat, guvna.
It’s alright. The music sort of hints a bit at early punk rock but never gets out of pop mode. The bonus tracks at the end are slightly more convincing, but it’s still pop-rock with the stylings of all late 70s London music: bit of dub etc. The singer’s voice annoys me too. It’s a subjective thing, but I can’t get past it. She’s almost as irritating as the chick from The Selector. But this is not a bad album. Perhaps it just wasn’t what I hoped for given the label, and the cover. Like the early Police, it flirts with punk and ska, but it’s still what it is. Should I say “pop” three times in one paragraph? Fuck it, I’m on the edge. Make it four. “Pop”.
