It's 1983 and school is out for the summer.

This Is England, is the story of those long weeks between terms where life changing events can take place.

12-year-old Shaun (Thomas Turgoose) is an isolated lad growing up in a grim coastal town, whose father has died fighting in the Falklands war.
Over the course of the summer holiday he finds fresh male role models when those in the local skinhead scene take him in.. With his new friends Shaun discovers a world of parties, first love and the joys of Dr Marten boots.. It's at one of these parties that he meets Combo (Stephen Graham), an older, racist skinhead who has recently got out of prison.
As Combo’s gang harass the local ethnic minorities, the course is set for a rite of passage that will hurl Shaun from innocence to experience.

Review

As far as skinhead movies go, I would have to say this is one of the better ones. Although I thought a lot of the acting was pretty lame, they did at least have a fairly realistic portrayal of skinheads.

Pretty much the typical story line you could expect, a young kid being bullied meets a bunch of skinheads, becomes one of them and then moves onto joining the National Front with a guy just out of prison. Nothing you couldn't really predict, but I guess at the same time that was the general storyline in the 80's, or the one that anyone would make a movie out of. A bunch of skinheads drinking at the pub every weekend wouldn't really make an enthralling film. It is also a semi-autobiographical account of the director, Shane Meadows', childhood.

I enjoyed it, although I think it was a little bit too hyped up for me, so when I finally got around to watching it I was slightly let down. It was a little bit too predictable and I didn't think you got to know the characters that well. A lot of the stories in there seemed to be just kind of left and ignored, for example 'What happened between Shaun and Woody and the other guys?' and where did Combo end up?

Perhaps I am looking too far into it, I just think it could have been better. But having said that it was a good movie, just not the kind that you would want to watch more than once.

And if you haven't seen it, I haven't ruined any of the storyline for you. So go and watch it and make up your own mind.

Feel free to leave a comment on what you thought of it, no doubt a lot of people will disagree with me and say it is the best movie ever made. Hey this is just my opinion.
