Rum Runner
Guns at Cyrano's
Longshot Music
2006
Rum Runner hail from Calgary, Canada and you would roughly place them in the 'celtic-punk' catagory. Having said that Al, the lead singer is quoted as saying in Nerve Magazine "...Personally I don’t see how
the use of country bass lines and
drumming, acoustic guitars, banjos
and harmonicas have landed us in
the Celtic-punk genre..." Which I guess is a fair statement. Although I would kind of land of them in that genre after listening to this cd, and there is nothing wrong with that genre.
I really enjoy this album. The fast paced / upbeat tracks, next to the more 'ballady' mellow numbers such as 'My Rifle, My Pony and me' which does kind of blow the 'celtic-punk' thing out of the water and gives a more western shoot em up feel.. in a ballady tune, however that works! Then you've got ones like 'Discourse on the Candian Interpretation of the Irish Pub' which is all about those poxy Irish pub chains.
If you are into stuff like Flogging Molly and Dropkick Muprphys then don't just expect a same sounding rip-off, but expect to find something you will really enjoy.
