Area7, Commissioner Gordon, Skinny Spliff and the Weedkillers
The Bedlam Beggars (SYD), 99%Fat, Mr Coffee, Trojan Horns, User-Friendly
Good Ska gigs are few and far between in Melbourne lately. Maybe it's
just that I have seen all the local bands so many times already, that
it is like only owning a handful of CD's. No matter how good those few
CD's are, at some point you really need to go and buy a few more.
So
at the Ska Fest, The Bedlam Beggars were that new CD. Coming down
especially from Sydney, these guys truly know how to put on a good
show. I had heard the 3 tracks from their self produced CD aswell as a
few others here on there on various compilations, although I never had
the pleasure of seeing them live. With the lead singer dressed as a
kind of Clockwork Rude Boy and the antics to go along with it, there
was never a dull stage moment. They were the highlight of my evening,
along with Skinny Spliff and the Weedkillers (aka H-Block101) who
always play a damn fine set, no matter what they are calling themselves.
User
Friendly started the night off, which was at about 7pm, and there was
really only a few handfuls of people there at this time. I don't really
get into this band. I guess they are more of that ska-pop-punk ‘genere'
and seem to want to be too much like No Doubt. I don't know if these
guys have really decided what they want to do, with a sax player who
seems to want to be a homie and a bass player who would more at home in
a metal band, they just don't really sit right being billed as a 'ska'
band.
Mister Coffee are always a crowd pleaser. All the kids get up
the front and jump around. Not really any skanking involved, although
they are always a happy bunch. One thing I have noticed with this band
that over the past 3 or 4 years since they began they certainly have
become a lot tighter and a lot more adventurous, adding in their Hip
Hop and metal bits here and there. I don't what this latest Hip Hop/Rap
craze is that seems to be affecting Melbourne bands. 99% Fat had a bit
of it going on aswell.
Oh well, to each his own I suppose.
Area
7 headlined, and as usual got the crowd going and everyone had a ball.
A good end to the night for all the punters I would imagine.
I got
to enjoy the night from the back of the room, where we had the
Moonstomp merchandise stall along with Tracey (Wrong Way, These Boots
zine) who also bought her stall down from Brisbane, and handled a lot
of the bands merchandise for them. I was well impressed with the amount
of people who are so keen to support the local bands and buy their
CD's, T-shirts etc. Aswell as supporting Moonstomp and Wrong Way. The
Ska crowd are always the best at supporting their locals
.
All up
it was a very enjoyable night, everyone was having a ball and majority
of the wankers seemed to stay away, bar one or two of course.Coming up
on 13th December also at the Corner is another Ska and Reggae
Extravaganza with the Melbourne Ska Orchestra and more. |
