British Streetpunk
1. Who was the driving force behind Deadline being formed and with most
of you playing in at least one other band at the time, why the decision
to start another?
Because none of our other bands had a singer half as good as Liz...
she's not only a brilliant singer but a great front woman and an
accomplished musician... it would have been a waste of talent not to
start Deadline. Liz and myself are the driving force behind the band
and unfortunately we had to part with Ray and Nic recently cos they
needed more time to spend on Knuckledust... which was fair enough...
they've been replaced by Dave and Lee.
2. For people who haven't heard any Deadline yet, how would you best describe your sound?
Early US punk ala Avengers, Bad Religion mixed with eighties UK
streetpunk ala 4 skins, Cock Sparrer. Add to this lots of aggression
Blood 4 Blood style, and the best female vocals you've heard in Punk....
3. Do you each have a favourite release or track so far, and why is it your favourite?
We all like the 2nd album better, the song writting's better and the production faultless.
Liz's favorite song is "Last Night", mine's "The Way We Were".
4. With having a female vocalist do you find people tend to be slightly
more judgmental than if you had a male vocalist(for want of a better
word)?
Liz has got much more stage presence than many male singers in this
scene, so it's not a problem... It's actually an advantage having her
cos it makes a nice change from all this male gruffy vocals we're used
to hearing. She has her own style and personality when she sings and
she seems to be going down really well with the crowds... both male and
female!
5. Best gig you ever played?
All gigs are good and we tend to say that the last gig we've played is
usually the best. We just played HITS last week end and we packed the
venue and had a great response in spite of our new line up, so I think
it was the best gig to date... but it'd be unfair to say that cos we
have played lots of blinding shows. One of the most memorable ones has
got to be club 007 in Praha which was mental with the whole place going
crazy. Most of the time, the best shows are when you share the bill
with friends... Liz and James love playing with Argy Bargy cos they
really rate the band and John and Daryl are great friends ... I
personally find it hard to play with both bands on a same bill... but
if it makes Liz ands James happy...
6. Worst gig you ever played?
On our last tour, some of the boys got too drunk one night in east
Germany and fucked up the whole set... so that wasn't too good I
guess... but apart from that, nothing really bad.
7. You are pretty busy with bands and jobs etc..do you still get much chance to just go for a quiet beer at the local?
Not really and it's a bit of a shame. We don't all live in the same
area anyway, Liz and I live South East of London in Kent, James live
East of London in Essex, Lee moves places every 2 months and Dave lives
North of London in Harlow.
7a. Whats the skinhead scene like around your area?..do you still
get to just go and be part of it without being the band that's playing?
Yes, we tend to be in the band that's playing and it gets annoying at
times cos you'd like to chill out and watch the bands on stage without
having to go on stage yourself... but it's got its good sides, we don't
pay to go to shows and we get free beers if we're lucky!
8. How do you see the internet impacting on the scene and the way it is perceived?
I think the internet is the best medium ever!
Look, we can do this interview and I can send you jpeg pictures in a
matter of hours whereas 10 years ago, it'd have taken months to write
and send letters... and it'd have cost money. I think it helps bands,
zine makers, promoters... anyone who wants to be involved in the scene
at a global scale can do so... of course it's got its bad sides and
some kids out there use it too much and spend 15 hours a day on forums
and message boards hiding under false names, trying to be people that
they're not... THEY should leave their computers at times and get a
life... you know, start a band, get a job, have sex... with a real
person.
9. Are there any sites and/or print zines which you regularly read?
I/we read everything which is sent to me/us and I always check out Punk & Oi! in the UK for up to date info.
