Albert Fish are a streetpunk band from Lisbon and have have played
since 1995. They have some demos and a cd called "Strongly Recommended"
(2002, Anti Corpos/ Zerowork Recs). They also have a few tracks on
compilations like the "street loyalty" tape compilation with The
Protest (Czeck rep), Alta Tension (spain), Social Combat (spain), OGR
(portugal) and Kateter (hungary). "Strongly Recommended is currently
avaliable through the aussieskins store, and is well worth checking
out.
Heres what Rattus had to say about the band.
Briefly how and when did Albert Fish form and who are you all? Albert
Fish starts in 1995, by the hand of 5 friends with the same love:
punk-rock! Basically we were thinking about have a good time doing what
we like and having our say. Actually our line up is: Rattus - bass
and back vocals (26 years old, working in a communications firm and
studding law. Helps in skinhead zine "Vontade de Ferro" ), Gustavo -
vocals (23, studding anthropology), Johnny - drums (22, working in a
wood firm. Also plays in punk bands Zootic and Simbiose), Tó - guitar
(23, working in a big supermarket and studding outsourcing. Also plays
in hardcore band Fiona At Forty), Rafa - guitar (27, working in a TV
studio setting up the scenarios).
Why did you choose the name Albert Fish? Well, at first we
just think how funny was the Albert Fish story (Albert Fish was a
American serial killer from the 30's) and the spelling of the name was
cool...then we even made a song called Albert Fish were he turns
vegetarian (the real one was cannibal)! hehe...hm m...nothing to take
too seriously though...
You have released one album ‘Strongly Recommended' through Anti
Corpos/ Zerowork Recs how has the response been to this in Portugal? Do
you have much distribution outside of Portugal? The response
inside and outside Portugal has been awesome! Really great! In Portugal
we sell really well and have more people from concert to concert
following the band. Outside Portugal we have a good distribution and
the prove is that we have interviews for fanzines and sites from every
parts of the world!
You have just finished a tour with The Varukers, how did you manage to get that gig? I'm
(Rattus) friend of the drummer and when I was in London last November I
planed their tour in Portugal. When I was contacting the venues with my
partner Zé to the gigs, some of the venues ask if Albert Fish could
play too as support band for Varukers, so come the idea to do all the
tour with them. How was the tour, did you guys get a good response from the crowds? The
tour was fantastic and we get a good response from the crowds,
especially in Lisbon with a full venue with everybody crazy... many stage
invasions by skinheads and punks! Ahah! In Vigo we also play with
Keltoi! (a great oi! band from Galiza). The lads from Varukers are
really nice people and was amazing to tour with them, we stay really
friends of them... crazy old bastards!! (
What future plans for touring and gigs do you have now? From
17 April to 07 May we have our European Tour! We're going to play
in Basque Country, Holland, Germany, Hungary, Italy and Spain. In
August we play in a big festival in Galiza (with bands like Dr Calypso,
Betagarri, Banda Bassoti, Inadaptats, etc). In September we're going on
tour with Skaparapid from Spain.
Which bands influence you the most? Punk rock and
streetpunk from 77... Stiff Little Fingers, The Clash, Cock Sparrer, The
Adicts, Sham 69, etc. And more recent bands too, like Dropkick Murphys,
Komintern Sect, Rancid, The Templars, Roots & Boots, etc...
Who is the main songwriter or it is a group effort? It's a group effort.
How would you describe the Albert Fish sound? You can say
we're a punk-rock band or you can say we're a streetpunk band... with a
little bit of HC and oi! touch. I agree with the Skinflicks when they
say: Punk-Rock - that's what is all about!
You sing in English as opposed to Portuguese, is there any particular reason for this? English
is the universal language, the language you can be understood in every
part of the world. Beside that our main influences sing in english.
What's the scene like in Portugal, many skins and punks about, do they get along etc? Portugal
is a small country, so our scene is really small too. The good thing is
that, since we're just a few, we are really united. Punks, skinheads
and hardcore kids hang out united! There's no ska or oi! bands (there
was Skamioneta do Lixo, a good ska band where played our drummer, but
ended). There's many hardcore bands and a few punk bands. Still playing
is Mata-Ratos, a old classic
street
punk band. About labels, the most important by now are Anti Corpos DIY
and Zerowork Recs Unfortunately the Skinhead scene is the
smaller and be a bonehead in Portugal is a fashion now, because the
football scene.
Any closing comments or things you want to say but haven't been asked the right question? Thanks for the interview! Hope that some day we could play in Australia too! Hate politics, love music! Cheers!
